Classroom

Bermudez had a few difficult semesters in the past, but he did not let that affect him, working twice as hard to get his grades in order while also excelling on the playing field. His family is a major factor in his academic life. His parents were there every step of the way to encourage him to succeed at the highest level, not only athletically, but academically. When Bermudez went undrafted in 2011, he used that as a motivator to work harder and make sure he was on track to graduate this fall with a degree in Recreation and Sport Management and a minor in business.

Character

When Bermudez accepted his award as the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year, the first thing he said is that it wouldn’t be possible without his teammates. Bermudez always carries himself with a team-first mentality, whether it’s at the awards podium or at the cages, where he’s always offering advice to younger players about the game and what it takes to be a student-athlete. Bermudez’s family is very important to him and has helped him become the player and the man that he wants to be. When he was passed up in the 2011 major-league draft, Bermudez decided that it was a blessing in disguise and that it would only make him work harder than before.

Community

For the past four years, Bermudez has been one of the most active student-athletes participating in a variety of community-service activities. He has helped annually with the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, and this year he has worked with the Escape to Miami Triathlon and the American Heart Association Heart Walk. Over the past few years, he has also helped with the Arthritis Foundation, the MLK Day of Service, Walk Out of the Darkness and assisting with a can food drive for the homeless.

Competition

Bermudez enters his senior season as an NCBWA Preseason All-American. As a junior, he was named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year, as well as a member of the all-conference and ABCA South Central All-Region teams the last two years. Bermudez led the league in batting average (.373), on-base percentage (.494) and walks (46). He also led his team in four additional offensive categories while recording a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage in center field. Bermudez will open the season as the leadoff hitter for the third consecutive season and he’s on pace to become FIU’s all-time leader in games played, at-bats, runs, hits, doubles, total bases and fielding percentage.
