Character

Foss is deeply invested in the university community. A 2016 team captain, Foss has served as the team representative on the UVA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for the past four years, while holding the role of SAAC president for the 2015-16 school year, where he represented the Virginia Athletics Department at leadership institutes and on various committees while regularly consulting with senior administrators on athletics affairs. He is the team representative on Student-Athletes Committed to Honor and also is a member of the student leadership team in Athletes in Action. Foss is one of a small number of certified instructors at UVA for the Green Dot program, which is a violence prevention that capitalizes on the power of peer influence across all levels of society. He also is one of six at-large committee members on UVA’s university-wide committee to assess climate related to sexual- and gender-based harassment and other forms of interpersonal violence. Foss was the co-chair on the University’s Gray-Carrington Scholarship Selection Committee in 2016. This scholarship is the most prestigious award presented to a member of the UVA third-year class.

Community

Foss was bestowed the Top VI for Service Award in May by the Atlantic Coast Conference. The award recognizes six student-athletes who have dedicated their time to serving others and have shown a passion for enriching the lives of others. He also was honored with UVA’s Ernest Ern Award, presented to a varsity student-athlete who has significantly impacted student and community life during his or her university career. Foss has served as a mentor with Athletes Committed to Education, volunteering on a weekly basis in local elementary schools and speaking to children about the importance of education and a healthy lifestyle.

Competition

Foss is a four-year starter at Virginia and has played in 58 matches at defender and midfield. He led Virginia in assists and points in 2015 and has been a part of three NCAA tournament teams, including a pair of NCAA College Cup teams, and was a key figure on UVA’s 2014 National Championship team. He converted on his penalty kicks in the shootout wins in the NCAA quarterfinals against Georgetown as well as the championship match against UCLA in 2014. Foss earned ACC Player of the Week honors in October 2015 following a two-goal, three-assist week against Portland and Louisville. His game-winning goal from the Louisville match was featured on ESPN’s SportsCenter Top Plays.
