Phil Woods carries a 3.82 GPA, the second-highest on the team and highest among seniors. He is a three-time Missouri Valley Conference Commissioner’s Academic Excellence Award honoree, three-time Missouri Valley Conference Honor Roll recipient, member of the Missouri State Athletic Director’s Honor Roll, and he earned an honorable mention nod on the Missouri Valley Conference men’s soccer scholar-athlete team. Woods also earned national recognition as a NSCAA Scholar All-Region Second Team member and CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree last season.

Character

Woods is one of the most vocal members of the men’s soccer team. He is a leader on the field and in the community. He will lead warm-ups at practice, holds the rest of his team accountable on the field and in practice, and is the first to communicate with other teammates. His teammates trust and respect him, and he is the epitome of what a team hopes for in a student-athlete. He has earned a great deal of respect based on the way he carries himself, and he deserves that respect. His actions are a reflection of who he is as a person, and he strives for the success of his teammates and other student-athletes at the university.

Community

In his four years at Missouri State, Woods has been an active member of the Student Athletic Advisory Committee, a member of the Entertainment Management Association, has volunteered at the Boys and Girls Club and the Champion Athlete of the Ozarks, and has taken part in the Bears Read Program. If you need something last-minute, he will make time to be there and will be the first, and sometimes only, member of the men’s soccer team to volunteer for activities, especially on campus. He gives back in many different ways including his extensive work with the Buddy Bears Program at Reed Academy Elementary School. He helped one of the kids there who has learning disabilities and problems with his home life by tutoring him and taking him to do activities, hopefully serving as an inspiration to him to keep working hard.

Competition

Woods earned his first MVC athletic award his junior season, being recognized as a men’s soccer All-MVC Honorable Mention selection. Woods has come in early and stayed late at practices and training sessions to become one of the most versatile members of the men’s soccer team. Over the last four years, he has played in more than 50 matches, taken more than 20 shots and has been one of the most vocal members on the men’s soccer team.
