Classroom

Ryan Walters is majoring in General Studies and carries an impressive 3.270 cumulative grade point average. Walters has earned Dean’s and Chancellor’s List honors three times in his academic career. During the 2012-13 season, he was named a WCHA Scholar-Athlete for carrying a 3.50 or better GPA and also was named to the All-WCHA Academic Team. He will graduate in the Spring of 2014.

Character

“Ryan established himself as a top flight player last year, and he knows how important he is to our team,” said Dean Blais, Nebraska Omaha’s head coach.  “He’s taken it upon himself to be a leader and even though he isn’t a captain, our team looks to him to help set the tone in our locker room and on the ice.  He’s not content to rest on what he did last year.  He wants to be even better in his senior season and that says a lot about him as a player and a teammate.”

Community

During his four-year career at UNO, Walters has been a part of team visits to Children’s Hospital, spending time with patients there.  He also has taken part in UNO’s annual Skate with the Mavs event.

Competition

Walters had one of the finest seasons in the history of Nebraska Omaha hockey in 2012-13. He was named a Second Team West All-American, a member of the WCHA First Team and the WCHA’s scoring champion. He tied for second nationally with 52 points, a total that also tied him for second best in school history. He was the Hockey Commissioners Association Player of the Month in November, a Top 10 finalist for the Hobey Baker Award and the school’s male athlete of the year. He currently ranks 11th all-time in career points at UNO (106). So far this season, he leads the Mavericks in scoring, having earned a point in each game.  A model of durability, he has appeared in 118 consecutive games, missing just one in his collegiate career.
