Classroom

Ryan Whalen maintains a 3.43 GPA in science, technology and society. Last year he was honored as a second-team CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American and an Academic All-Pac-10 selection.

Character

After originally joining the team as a walk-on, a determined Whalen worked hard and earned a scholarship. Whalen is one of the most respected players on the team by players and coaches.

Community

Whalen has participated in Second Mile, where he assisted with building projects in East Palo Alto, visited the Dialysis Ward at Lucille Packare Children’s Hospital, participated in Stanford’s Youth Olympics Day and visited an island off Honduras last spring break where he helped build houses, schools and interacted with villagers.

Competition

Whalen was Stanford’s leading receiver each of the last two years and earned honorable-mention All-Pac-10 honors in 2009. As a junior Whalen caught 57 passes for 926 yards and four touchdowns, averaging 16.2 yards per catch and 71.2 yards per game.
