Character

Hawkins has overcome a major facial injury suffered during a game in 2007 to resume his duties as Washington’s starting goalkeeper. He has served as team captain since 2006 and was the only redshirt freshman to make the Washington team his first year in 2006 (true freshmen are not eligible).

Community

Hawkins is currently helping three large non-profits in the Seattle area (United Way of King County, Treehouse for Kids, Children of the Nations) build a major fundraising campaign that hopes to generate more than $100,000 between the three of them. Particularly, they will be utilizing their social entrepreneurship to get Generations X and Y involved in philanthropy through technology and social networking. In addition, Hawkins has developed a Web application for easing course scheduling of the 280 departments and 11,000 courses at the University of Washington. Hawkins has also worked as the Director of Product Development for A to Z Sports, Inc., from 2006-2008, is currently a research assistant for Intel Research in Seattle and is the Chief Technology Officer for Vibe Globe, a start-up company.

Competition

After suffering a serious facial that sidelined him for most of his sophomore season, Hawkins returned for his junior season to post two of team’s three shutouts. He also recorded 24 saves and a 1.42 goals against average. Hawkins won the starting goalkeeping job as a redshirt freshman in 2006 and played in 19 games, starting 18. His seven shutouts that year tied for sixth on Washington’s single-season list. For his efforts, he was named an All-Pac-10 honorable mention.
