Classroom

Samson Sergi graduated in May 2019 with a degree in marketing and a 3.843 GPA, earning a spot on the Dean’s List. He is currently enrolled in the MBA program, where he holds a 3.667 GPA. He is a four-time All-Academic BIG EAST Team honoree, a four-time Dean’s List honoree, and he has been recognized at Xavier University All-Honors Day four times for having a 3.50 GPA or higher.

Character

Sergi is a 2019 team captain who overcame Lyme disease prior to the start of his freshman season in 2015. Head Coach Andy Fleming said this of Sergi: “Not only would I say Sam is the template for a Xavier student-athlete, I’d say he fits that mold universally as well. We strive to develop husbands, citizens and people you can hire, and Sam goes above and beyond that. To lead our team in scoring and be an all-conference performer in a conference like the BIG EAST is one thing, but to add his academic prowess in an MBA environment and the countless hours he’s put in spearheading many of the faith-based groups on our campus makes him truly one-of-a-kind. I don’t expect to see someone like him come along again for a very long time. I’m certain that there aren’t many young men like him out there, and he truly has left his mark on this campus as an athlete, student, leader, citizen and as a teammate.”

Community

Sergi was the VP of Athletes in Action from 2016-19. He spent at least two hours per week mentoring and leading athletes on campus, growing them in their faith and implementing that onto the field. He helped lead trips to Puerto Rico while being part of the Leadership Team at Xavier. He has been a volunteer at Buddy Walk for Down Syndrome from 2015-19 with 10 hours of service over four years. He has been a Student Athlete Advisory Committee member from 2015-19, reporting NCAA updates and organizing events on and off campus for all student-athletes.

Competition

Sergi has been named to the 2019 All-BIG EAST Preseason Team and, in 2018, he was an All-BIG EAST Second Team selection. As of nomination time, he has three goals and helped Xavier defeat No. 2 Akron in the team’s 2019 season opener on August 30. He has 22 career goals, which is two shy of moving into the all-time top-10 for goals at Xavier. Sergi also has four career assists. He has played in 52 matches with 36 starts, has helped Xavier post a 27-21-12 overall record in four seasons and has helped Xavier to a 2-0 start to 2019, ranking 10th in the nation by TopDrawerSoccer and No. 14 in the nation by the United Soccer Coaches.
