Classroom

Shaq Goodwin will graduate in May of 2016 and is in good academic standing at the University of Memphis. In his career, Goodwin has earned Tiger Academic 30 and Tiger 3.0 Club honors. The Tiger Academic 30 recognizes the athletics department’s top 30 grade-point averages (all student-athletes) each semester.

Character

Goodwin is a high-character individual who is not only loved by Memphis fans, but also respected by opposing coaches and players. This was evidenced last season when Goodwin received the 2014-15 American Athletic Conference Sportsmanship Award. The conference honor, voted on by the league’s head coaches, is given to the student-athlete that best reflects the ideals of sportsmanship—ethical behavior, fair play and integrity—in collegiate basketball.

Community

Goodwin regularly visits area elementary schools and reads to the schoolchildren. On several occasions, he has stopped by St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital to check in on the young patients battling cancer. He also has given talks to youth organizations and stresses the importance of working hard in school so they can reach their goals. At the team’s annual one-day Kamp Tiger event, Goodwin has been the leader in reaching out to the area’s Special Olympians and engaging them in the basketball skills sessions. Moreover, in late August of 2015, Goodwin attended the city of Memphis mayoral debate held on the University of Memphis campus. The debate was held after his summer school session was over, and although not a Memphis resident and unable to vote, Goodwin wanted to attend and hear where the candidates stood on several issues that were discussed in his summer school classes.

Competition

In his career, Goodwin has earned All-American Athletic Conference Second Team and Conference USA All-Freshman Team honors. He also was named to the NABC All-District team his sophomore season. Goodwin has been a member of two NCAA Tournament teams (2012-13, 2013-14) and also helped the Tigers to a sweep of the 2012-13 Conference USA regular-season and tournament titles. Entering his senior campaign in 2015-16, Goodwin needed only 44 points to reach the 1,000-point milestone for his career. With that milestone Goodwin will be the 50th player in school history to do so. Goodwin also needs only 84 boards to break into the top-10 on the Memphis career rebounding chart.
