Classroom

Shay Mannino exemplifies the Central Michigan soccer program’s commitment to academic excellence. The Chippewa goalkeeper maintains a 3.82 grade-point average while majoring in elementary education with a planned program minor. She has earned Academic All-MAC honors twice in her career while also being named CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District twice, including first-team honors in 2009. Mannino was also recognized by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America following the 2009 season as she was named a third-team Scholar All-American, becoming the first Chippewa to earn the honor. CMU has posted the highest cumulative GPA among all NCAA soccer programs in the country in all three of Mannino’s seasons. Her high marks helped Central Michigan post a cumulative 3.753 GPA through the 2010 spring semester.

Character

Mannino is regarded by the CMU coaching staff as the team’s hardest working player and one of the hardest workers in program history. She split time in net as a freshman in 2007, but her work ethic propelled her to the top of the depth chart the past two seasons. Mannino has been the Chippewas’ unquestioned starter since the 2008 campaign, playing all but 154 out of 4,103 minutes and leading Central to a 28-9-6 record in her starts. Despite her success, Mannino showed uncanny leadership by ceding the net to Kristen Hubright during penalty kicks against Toledo in the 2009 MAC Tournament semifinals. Hubright made a crucial save to help the Chippewas advance and Mannino did not miss a beat in goal the next match, posting a shutout to clinch CMU’s first MAC Tournament title.

Community

Mannino represents the Chippewas with pride on and off the pitch. The Grosse Ile, Mich., native volunteers her time in various aspects of both the CMU and metro Detroit community. She puts her elementary education major to work as a volunteer at Holy Trinity School in Detroit, where she teaches children math and reading. At CMU, Mannino collects food for the university’s annual food drive, raising funds for the CMU Athletics Jock Rock. She has also served Mount Pleasant, Mich., through the WCFX Caravan of Care by organizing and moving food and clothing for the less fortunate. She also spends time as an instructor at soccer camps through CMU and the RUSH soccer club during her summers.

Competition

Mannino led the nation in 2009 with a MAC-record 17 solo shutouts (fourth most in NCAA Division I history) and posted a 0.60 goals against average (19th in the nation). She was named the MAC’s first Defensive Player of the Year, first-team All-MAC, MAC All-Tournament and second-team all-region for her performance. Her efforts propelled CMU to its first MAC regular season and tournament title along with an NCAA Tournament victory over No. 24 Purdue. She was also at the center of one of the most impressive defensive streaks ever seen as CMU posted 13 consecutive shutouts (second most in NCAA history), a span that elapsed 1,238:23 in playing time. Mannino was in goal for 1,134:36 of that streak, the third-longest shutout streak any Division I goalkeeper has ever put together. Mannino will go down as arguably the best goalkeeper in league history as she is already sits atop both the MAC and CMU’s record books with 29 career shutouts in only three seasons.
