Classroom

Stephen Johns is a marketing major in Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business.  He enters his senior year with a 2.911 grade-point average. While his main goal is to play professional hockey, he is looking towards the future as he would like to open his own company to develop his own line of hockey and sporting apparel.

Character

Stephen Johns will serve as one of Notre Dame’s three alternate captains this season and is a two-year member of the team’s leadership committee.  He is well respected by his teammates and the Irish coaching staff for his leadership skills.  Johns is a second-round draft choice of the Chicago Blackhawks in 2010 and had the opportunity to sign with the NHL team following the 2012-13 season, but decided to return to Notre Dame for his senior year to finish his collegiate career. Following last season, he was named the co-winner of Notre Dame hockey’s Cameron Compton Leadership Award for organizing his teammates in the M is for Movember fundraising effort for men’s health issues.

For the second consecutive year, Stephen Johns oversaw Notre Dame’s M is for Movember fund-raising efforts.  The event, in which the players grow mustaches during November, raises awareness and funding for men¹s health issues.  After raising over $4,500 in its first year, this year’s efforts raised over $5,100 for the cause.  Throughout his career at Notre Dame, Stephen has been active in the Irish Youth Hockey League (IYHL), working with local youth hockey groups, teaching and helping grow the game in the local area.  He has participated in team activities like the Junior Diabetes Walk, the Buddy Walk for kids with Downs Syndrome and has participated in Habitat for Humanity.  He also volunteers with his hometown fire department (Ellwood City, Pa.) doing maintenance work on the town¹s fire equipment.
