Classroom

Fowles is on pace to graduate from LSU in May 2008 with a degree in general studies with a concentration in communication studies, sociology and sports studies.

Character

Fowles is a leader by example both on and off the court. On the floor, Fowles is both vocal leader as well as leading by her actions. She is able to bring her team together with a quick “Let’s Go” or with a huddle in the corner of the floor. Off the court, Fowles takes younger players under her wing to help them in their first few years not only on the basketball team, but also in school and in life.

Community

Fowles has spent time with her teammates at area community events. She participated in the rebuilding of a playground at a Baton Rouge area elementary school this past summer. She also takes part in the LSU sponsored BOOzar, a Halloween event for the local Baton Rouge kids

Competition

Fowles is one of the best players in the nation, proven by her performance of the court and with her selection to the preseason first-team Associated Press All-American team. She also has spent time during each of the last two summers with the United States Senior National team. A 6-6 senior center for the LSU Lady Tigers, she averaged 16.9 points, 12.6 rebounds and 2.1 blocked shots as a junior last year. She helped guide LSU to the program’s fourth straight NCAA Final Four (her third) as the Fresno Regional’s Most Outstanding Player. The Miami, Fla., native has scored 1,626 points in her career, grabbed 1,209 rebounds, blocked 252 shots, collected 164 steals and shot 58.4 percent from the floor in 109 games. Sylvia has continued her strong play into her senior year where she has been named a mid-season candidate for both the Wooden and Naismith Awards.
