Classroom

Taryn Miller has made the Dean’s List during all three years of undergrad. In 2014, Miller placed first in the Pitch’s competition for the Regnier Venture Creation Challenge and earned CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District 6 First Team. During 2012-2013 she was a recipient of the Durwood Education Fund Scholarship and a member of Phi Kappa Phi. Additionally, Miller is a two-time Academic All-WAC and a three-time UMKC Scholar Athlete.

Miller previously interned at Waddell and Reed as an advisor assistant and hopes to continue into the school year to gain insight into being a successful advisor while strengthening her relationships with advisors. After interning, Miller plans to become a financial advisor. Once she has graduated with her MBA, she wants to focus on creating contacts for her business. The advantage of Miller’s internship is that she has a team that she can work with and will help support her in the next few years. As the team continues to grow, she plans to become a partner with them. Their goal is to be the top group in their targeted area, and the top performing team in Waddell and Reed.

According to Miller, financial advising is appealing because of the relational aspect and the impact she will be able to make in her clients’ lives. She wants to be able to help send kids to college and to be there for them when the unexpected happens. As Miller works, she hopes to give back to the community and the world.

Character

Miller received the People to People award 2015, and she is a SAAC Representative and FCA member.

One way she has found a way to give back to the community is through coaching. Not only can she share her volleyball skills and knowledge, but also she can help young girls navigate through life. She loves being able to talk with them about their concerns and share her experiences.

Miller strives to be a leader and role model for girls on and off the court. Said the senior, “Whether I am on the court or in the classroom I strive to be my very best.”

Community

Miller has worked a great deal in her community. Her efforts include working with the Morning Glory Café, Boys and Girls club, Center Middle School: Celebrity Reading Day and YMCA Before School Program. Miller has also held a number of positions during her work within the community. She was a volunteer at Invest Midwest, member of Phi Kappa Phi, assistant coach for Invasion Volleyball Club and head coach for Winter and Summer Invasion volleyball clinics. Miller was an intern at Red Bark KC this past spring and an intern at Waddell & Reed during the summer.

Competition

Miller was named first-team All-WAC in 2014 and second-team All-WAC in 2013. Most recently she was named preseason All-WAC in 2015 and AVCA Division I All-Midwest Region Honorable Mention. Miller was named MVP and to the All-Tournament Team at the CEFCU Classic in 2014, to the All-Redhawks Invitational Team in 2015, the Kangaroo Klassic All-Tournament Team in 2013 and to the UniWyo Cowgirl Classic All-Tournament Team in 2012. Additionally, Miller was named WAC Player of the Week on Sep. 15, 2014. She helped UMKC to its first conference title in 2014 and a school record number of wins (924), conference wins (12) and consecutive wins (17), while setting school records for digs in a season (663) and digs in a career (1,740 entering season).
