Classroom

A physics major with a 3.62 GPA, Thomas Hackimer was named the 2015-16 BIG EAST Scholar-Athlete of the Year and also won the BIG EAST Institutional Male Scholar-Athlete Award. Hackimer earned first-team Capital One Academic All-District honors last season and is a three-time Academic All-BIG EAST selection. The senior also has helped the baseball program win two BIG EAST Team Academic Excellence Awards (2012-13, 2014-15).

Character

Drafted by the New York Mets in the 15th round of the 2015 MLB Draft, Hackimer returned to school for his senior season to complete his degree and play out his collegiate career. Off the field, he has served as a team representative for both the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and Student Development 101 since 2012.

Community

Hackimer has been involved with numerous community service initiatives including The League of Yes, St. John’s the Baptist Church, St. Nicholas Men’s Shelter, Relay for Life, St. John’s Bread and Life, the ASL Turkey Drive and the Autism Fun Run.

Competition

As of March 9, Hackimer led all active Division I pitchers in both appearances (99) and saves (29). The reliever holds program-records in single-season saves (15), single-season appearances (35), career-saves (29) and career-appearances (99). As a junior, Hackimer earned second-team ABCA All-American honors, first-team ABCA All-Northeast Region accolades and unanimous first-team All-BIG EAST honors. Named to the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award Watch List as a senior, Hackimer also has earned Preseason All-America honors from both Collegiate Baseball and the NCBWA. Hackimer was named the 2016 Preseason BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year and earned unanimous preseason All-BIG EAST honors.
