Thomas Woodrey is a senior double majoring in finance and health sector management and policy in the school of business. He has been able to maintain a GPA above a 3.0 since he started at the University of Miami in Fall 2012. He has made the athletic department’s Book Buster Honor Roll (3.0) six times, Athletic Director Honor Roll (3.2) six times, the Dean’s List (3.5) twice, and the Provost’s Honor Roll (3.75) once. He also made the ACC All-Academic Team in 2014 and was named a UM Student Athlete of the Week in 2015 and continues to be successful both in the classroom and on the field.

Character

Woodrey has demonstrated that he possesses a keen ability to meet life’s challenges, which he has demonstrated over time in his sport and in the classroom. This attribute proves that he is able to overcome challenges and to tackle these challenges with tactfulness and enthusiasm. Woodrey is well-liked by his friends, teammates, coaches and professors, and he is assertive, relentless, meticulous and striving for the best. He also is enthusiastic to see to it that all of his goals are well-implemented. He is idealistic yet pragmatic in meeting these goals, as he is set to graduate in May.

Community

Woodrey has not only excelled in his sport and in the classroom but in his community as well. He has volunteered his time and efforts to the Community of Greater Miami Dade County by fundraising for shoes and bath supplies for the homeless shelter. He has developed partnerships with various community and educational constituents bridging them with learning and recreation. He also has participated on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee for the University of Miami Athletics department since 2014.

Competition

During his junior year Woodrey served as Miami’s Friday-night starter for nearly an entire season and was recognized with second-team All-ACC honors. He recorded a 7-2 record and 2.88 ERA, the lowest among all pitchers in rotation, and struck out 62 batters while walking just 24 in a team-high 103.0 innings. He held batters to a .234 average, the lowest among all starters, and he went at least 6.0 innings in 13 of 17 starts and tossed the only complete game of any pitcher all season. He recorded a 3.15 ERA in nine ACC starts, striking out 35 batters over a team-high 60.0 innings against ACC competition.

He tossed Miami’s first complete-game, one-hit shutout since 2003 in a win over Georgia Tech last year on May 14. Woodrey also struck out seven batters against the Yellow Jackets, tying his career high, and threw 112 pitches. He earned his seventh win of the season in an NCAA Coral Gables Regional victory over Columbia, and he exited with a no-decision but tossed 6.0 innings in his College World Series debut against Arkansas on June 15. He struck out seven Razorbacks and allowed just one unearned run.

Currently, Woodrey is the Friday-night pitcher for this season.
