Tim currently holds a 3.814 grade point average with a major in economics and minor in history and is set to graduate in May 2009. Named an Academic All-American (second-team) by the College Sports Information Directors of America and ESPN The Magazine in 2007 … Two-time SEC Academic Honor Roll selection.

Character

Masthay was named to the Frank Ham Society of Character by UK Athletics in 2008, which is given to UK student-athletes for exceptional commitment to academic excellence, athletic participation, personal development, being a role model, and career preparation. This award is the highest honor the UK Athletic Department bestows on its student-athletes. Tim was also elected treasurer of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee in 2007-08.

Community

Masthay is one of only 11 football players in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) chosen as a member of the 2008 Allstate American Football Coaches Association Good Works Team and was also named to the 2008 SEC Good Works Team. He is also a member of a SAAC fundraising team for American Cancer Society UK Relay for Life and has collected groceries for elementary school students and their families through Circles of Influence program at Southland Christian Church. Additionally, Tim has been very active in the “Cats That Care” service program during his Wildcat career. During the summer of 2008, he traveled to the African country of Ghana for an educational and service trip. In 2007, Masthay volunteered at the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge where he transported guests to and from medical appointments and answered phones. He also volunteered as the American Cancer Society Relay for Life where he interacted with cancer survivors and their families, served beverages, and cleaned up after the Relay’s Survivor dinner. Tim donated and participated in FreeStore Food Bank’s 5K Hunger Run/Walk in Cincinnati, Ohio and assisted fundraising efforts for a project aimed at providing stockings filled with gifts to underprivileged youth in the Central Kentucky region. Additionally during the holidays, Masthay participated in an event at UK that provided an elegant Christmas meal and gifts to underprivileged families from the Central Kentucky Region. Throughout his tenure at Kentucky, Tim has been a featured speaker at various events throughout the community.

Competition

Through the first two games of the 2008 season, Tim was averaging a career-best 43.2 yards per punt and 10 of his 14 kickoffs have gone for touchbacks. During his junior season, Masthay averaged a career-best 39.8 yards per punt in 2007 and handled kickoffs. As a kickoff man, he led the SEC in touchbacks with 23 while serving as the placekick holder for record-setting kicker Lones Seiber. Tim’s best single-game average of 47.3 yards per punt came in the wins over No. 9 Louisville and No. 1 LSU in 2007. Due to his impressive performance in 2007, Masthay was named UK’s Special Teams Player of the Year.
