Classroom

Todd Wharton is a strong student and has been named to the ACC All-Academic Soccer Team and the ACC Academic Honor Roll.

Character

Wharton was voted the team captain and is an exemplary leader on the field, in the locker room and in the classroom. He suffered an off-season knee injury prior to the 2014 season and missed the first game of the season but worked diligently to come back quickly and return for the Cavaliers’ second match of the year.

Community

Wharton and his teammates worked with an organization called Athletes for Hope. Through Athletes for Hope, they met with students from Cale Elementary School and were paired up with kids whom the administration thought would benefit from extra guidance. Wharton spent about two hours a week with them in classes and recess. Said Wharton, “It was really cool to see the smile on their faces when we arrived each week. I know when I was younger I loved having older kids hang out with us, so being on the other side of it was an awesome experience.”

Competition

Wharton was named third-team All-ACC during the 2014 season and has started 62 of UVa’s 63 matches since the start of the 2012 season. He converted on each of his penalty kicks during UVa’s PK shootouts in their NCAA Tournament matches against Georgetown and in the championship game win over UCLA. He scored the equalizer with 53 seconds left in second half in the NCAA quarters at Georgetown to help send the Cavaliers to the NCAA College Cup. He wore the captain’s armband in each of UVa’s 2014 NCAA Tournament matches and helped lead UVa to the NCAA Championship.
