Physical Education

Tyra Buss holds a 3.2 GPA in physical education. She is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree.

Buss is a natural-born leader who has helped change the culture at Indiana in her three years. A team captain for the 2017-18 season, Buss is widely known around Bloomington as someone with a friendly face who makes time for anyone she meets. She never turns down the chance to talk to a peer, fan or athletics staff member. She’s friendly to everyone she meets and lives by the team’s mantra of graduate, win, serve.

Buss has taken part in a variety of community involvements including the following: Hoosier HEROES, Hoosier Readers, IU Best Buddies, Camp Riley, Hoosier Outrun Cancer, Candy Stripe Crew event for disabled and handicapped adult and children, Slam Dunk for Literacy, Habitat for Humanity, Salvation Army and DistinXion.

As of nomination time, Buss was eighth all-time in scoring (1,601), second in free throws made (453), fourth in free throws attempted (594), fifth all-time in steals (216) and tied for third in assists (400) at Indiana. She averaged 18.2 points, 4.6 assists, 2.4 steals and 3.3 rebounds in 2016-17. She posted back-to-back 600 points seasons—a first in IU history—and set a school record with 59 consecutive double-figure scoring games. She is the fastest player in school history to record 1,000 points, and Buss has scored the most points for any Indiana Women’s Basketball player through their junior season. Along with being a preseason All-Big Ten (’17) selection, she has earned WBCA All-American Honorable Mention (‘17) honors, two first-team All-Big Ten nods (2016, 2017), a Wade Trophy Watch List selection (‘17) and a Naismith Preseason Top 25 honor (‘17). She is on pace to break school records in points scored, assists, steals, free throws made and free throws attempted.
