MVC Scholar-Athlete 1st team in 2012 and 2013…2013 NABC Honors Court…Two-time MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week (12/13/2012 and 2/15/2013)...Has earned a spot on the Bradley Athletic Director’s Honor Roll in three of the last four semesters…2011 MVC Honor Roll…Begins the 2013 Fall semester with a 3.29 cumulative grade point average.

Character

A native of the south side of Chicago, Walt lost his father to cancer at the end of his sophomore year in high school…After an unfocused first two years of high school, he made a promise to his father to go to college and earn his degree and he is on pace to graduate on schedule in May with a bachelor’s degree in psychology from one of the top-ranked universities in the Midwest…Walt has a very reserved personality, but he is always respectful and appreciative of his opportunities…He is very focused and determined to do right by his father…He is well aware he will be his family’s provider and has positioned himself for both a professional playing career, as well as a real-world professional career…This is a responsibility that drives him in everything that he does.

Community

Walt is actively involved with his teammates in several community service activities…On Oct. 5, Walt and several teammates volunteered for the third consecutive year at the Methodist Medical Center Hospice program Kourage Kids Camp, which is designed to assist young people grieving the loss of a loved one…The Braves also have added two honorary team members for the 2013-14 season, brothers Johnah (5) and Jarret (9) Sahr, and Walt regularly interacts with the two boys as a mentor as Johnah continues to recover from surgery and treatment for Stage 4 High Risk Neuroblastoma…During the 2012-13 season, Walt was adopted by the Peoria Heights Elementary School kindergarten and first grade students…He hosted two classes at Bradley, giving the students a tour of the athletics facilities, and visited the school to speak to the students about the importance education and his own experience…Was a volunteer at the 2011 Heart of Illinois Downs Syndrome Buddy Walk…Annually joins the Braves to visit patients in local hospitals during the holiday season.

Competition

2013 1st Team NABC All-District 16…2013 All-MVC 2nd Team…2013 MVC All-Defense Team…2012 and 2013 MVC Most Improved Team…In 2012-13 joined Hersey Hawkins as only players in MVC history to record 500 points, 100 rebounds, 100 assists and 70 steals in a season…Active scoring leader in the MVC with 1,146 career points…Fourth player in Bradley history to lead the team in both scoring (15.6 ppg) and assists (3.8 apg) in a single season…His 75 steals in 2012-13 tied for 20th nationally…The 6-foot-3 guard led the Braves with 128 defensive rebounds last season…His length-of-the-court drive for a buzzer-beating, game-winning 3-pointer vs. Missouri State Jan. 19, 2013 was a finalist for the Geico Best of College Basketball Play of the Year…Has scored at least 20 points 14 times in his career…Shooting 50.1 percent on his 2-point field goal attempts the last two seasons…Led Bradley to one of the best turnarounds in the nation last season, resulting in an 18-17 overall record and a quarterfinals appearance in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament.
