Zach Mason is a three-time OSU Scholar-Athlete, two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and two-time Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and NSCAA All-East Scholar.

Character

Mason is one of the most dedicated and responsible players that John Bluem has coached in his 19 seasons. He approaches soccer, academics and life with an incredible determination to be successful and has been a tremendous leader for the program, exemplifying the best qualities of a true student-athlete. Mason holds himself to high standards, and this has rubbed off on all of his teammates. He is a two-time captain for the Buckeyes and was a 2014 Big Ten Sportsmanship Award Winner. This past summer, Mason was in the Bucks Go Pro Summer Internship program, where he learned valuable career, work and personal leadership skills during his time.

Community

Zach Mason has been a part of the Race for Cure in summers of 2012 and 2013 and Kids Kicking Cancer clinics in the falls of 2012-14. This past spring, Mason was involved with Meals on Wheels, and he participated with Habitat for Humanity this past summer. Mason also volunteered at local youth soccer teams during the past four years as a Buckeye student-athlete.

Competition

Mason is a two-time captain for the Buckeyes and has a constant presence at midfield, starting in all 59 games the last three years. Mason was named to the 2012 Big Ten All-Freshman Team, and he was one of two players to start in every game his sophomore season. As a junior, he guided the Buckeyes back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in four years. He advanced the Buckeyes past in-state rival Akron in the NCAA first round after converting his penalty kick in the final round of the 15-round penalty shootout. In all, Mason has posted 42 shots with 10 on goal and four assists in three campaigns.
