Allyssa Lane

Allyssa Lane Finalist
School Position Major
Shaw University Guard Recreation

Lane is a member of the CIAA All-Academic Team and was the Shaw Student of the Month in October 2011. Despite being only 4-11, Lane has been a huge presence on the court for Shaw University.  As the Lady Bears made their run to the NCAA Final Four last season, it was Lane’s presence on the court that provided a calming influence at the times the team needed it most.  Her critical performance in the CIAA championship game - where she was seven-for-seven from the floor - propelled the Lady Bears not only to the conference crown, but into the NCAA Tournament.  Off the court, Lanes leads by example, working as hard on her class work as she does in practice. Given her height, her presence on a championship-caliber team is something of a surprise to any who look at a roster, but have not seen her play.  Looked over by a number of schools, she has proven herself as a leader on a Final Four team. Lane has been active in the community in a variety of ways.  She has mentored high school students at St. Paul’s Church’s Read To Achieve Program, worked at a shelter to feed the homeless, took part in a diabetes fundraiser, and participated in breast cancer awareness activities. Lane was a key performer for the Lady Bears, sometimes as a starter, sometimes providing a spark from the bench.  She was second on the team in assists last season and even pulled in 80 rebounds, despite the fact that she was the shortest player on the court.  She averaged 6.8 points per game.
