Gilliam-Washington was selected as the team captain for the 2011-12 season and was selected by the coaches and her teammates. She has is a representative for the women’s basketball team on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Gilliam-Washington has overcome many challenges to have a successful basketball career. She was born with a partial hearing loss to which she has had to adapt in both the classroom and on the court. Additionally, Gilliam-Washington tore her ACL in early February of 2011 and had to go through an intense rehab over the summer to prepare her for the current season. Gilliam-Washington has been very active in the Salisbury community both individually and with her team during her time at Livingstone. During her four years as a Blue Bear, Gilliam-Washington has worked with Girls Inc., which is an afterschool and tutoring program for females ages 5-16. She has also worked at the local gym helping with the junior Bobcats basketball team. Along with her women’s basketball teammates, Gilliam-Washington has helped tutor at a local elementary school and also participated in Habitat for Humanity in the Salisbury area where the men’s and women’s basketball teams assisted in the building of a house for a local family. Gilliam-Washington has been an all-around player for the Blue Bears in her four years. She has averaged 5.5 points and 3.9 rebounds per game over her three seasons. She has also been a standout defender on the team and in the CIAA as she is consistently at the top of the team in steals.
