Javen McNeill has been in excellent academic standing during his time at Fayetteville State University. He was inducted in the 2014 Phi Eta Sigma National Honors Society and maintains a 3.2 GPA while pursuing his business administration degree.


McNeill has held many leadership positions while at Fayetteville State. He currently serves as the captain of the men’s basketball team, holding this position for the last two seasons (2017-18, 2018-19). McNeill takes pride in being a leader and being recognized as one who embodies a hard work ethic and passion in all that he does.

McNeill has overcome many obstacles. After suffering a foot injury during his sophomore season and being sidelined for the rest of the year, McNeill returned to the court his junior year.


McNeill is the vice president of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee and has been named Mr. SAAC for two years in a row.

McNeill is consistently involved with efforts to help his surrounding community. With damage in Fayetteville caused by Hurricane Florence, McNeill and the men’s basketball team teamed up with Habitat for Humanity to restore damage caused by the storm. Some duties included repairing homes, yards and painting houses. With his team, he helped hand out meals to families and individuals who were sheltered in the recreation center across from the university. McNeill has also served and worked with Urban Discovery Ministries, Inc., which is a missionary group that impacts the youth and community of Norfolk, Va. The community is very important to McNeill, and he loves being a part of any effort to help improve it.


In 2017, McNeill received Fayetteville State’s Comeback Player of the Year award and the Coach’s Award. The Coach’s Award is presented to the individual who exhibits leadership and passion on their respective team. McNeill also led the team in rebounding, field goal percentage and blocks in the last basketball season.
