Danielle Robinson’s stats just a small part of her contribution to her university

by Brenda VanLengen February 07, 2011 in Women’s Basketball

Danielle Robinson exudes joy.  Whether she is delivering Meals on Wheels to seniors in and around Norman, Oklahoma, finishing an exciting play through the lane on the basketball court or ministering to orphans in Haiti, Danielle flashes that effervescent smile and invites those around her to feel her passion and joy for life.

She gives much of the credit to her mom. “My mom is my best friend and I trust her word.  She’s a great woman of faith and she has inspired me. … Continue Reading

Tyrel Reed: A Kansan at Kansas is about as good as it gets

by Blair Kerkhoff February 01, 2011 in Men’s Basketball

Tyrel Reed is the essence of Kansas basketball.

Not just the university, where he’s a starting guard for the highly ranked Jayhawks, but of a state that loves its college basketball. When a small community product becomes an important component of a championship-level squad as a senior while excelling in the classroom, well, that’s about as Kansan as it gets.

Coach Bill Self appreciates the story, but his reliance on Reed isn’t based on any sense of duty to the home state.

The fog of injury has lifted for North Dakota’s Chay Genoway

by Jess Myers January 27, 2011 in Hockey

Ice hockey, especially at the college level, is a game played with the hands and the legs and the body. But mostly, it’s a game played with the head.

The lightning-fast on-ice action requires the reflexes of a cat, and the ability to think fluidly, and make decisions that can change the nature of a game in seconds, and mean the difference between winning and losing.

So what is a student-athlete to do when the doctors tell a thinking man’s hockey player to stop playing hockey,… Continue Reading

Dobbs believes in always “giving it back”

by Steve Richardson January 10, 2011 in Football

Navy’s senior quarterback Ricky Dobbs is one of the most prolific rushing quarterbacks in college football history.  But mastering Navy’s option offense is just a footnote to Dobbs’ off-the-field contributions to school and community.

In winning the 2010 Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award in the Football Bowl Subdivision, Dobbs, who started 25 games for Navy during his career, performed admirably in the community and classroom and displayed excellent character. As an acronym for Celebrating… Continue Reading

Erin Anthony set to put her education to good use after graduating from Army

by Debbie Antonelli January 03, 2011 in Women’s Basketball

Senior center Erin Anthony is a CoSIDA Academic All-American at Army.  She carries the dual title of captain of the basketball team and cadet-level captain at West Point.  The two-time Patriot League Scholar Athlete of the Year grew up in Allentown, Pennsylvania – famous for its steel and concrete industry.

“Concrete” describes Erin at the core of her value system and her rebounding efforts in the lane are as strong as “steel.”  Of the seven Army values,… Continue Reading

Blankenship fits the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award mold to a T

by Clare Lochary December 27, 2010 in Volleyball

There aren’t many Ellie Blankenships in the world. More’s the pity.

Blankenship, a senior libero from the University of Northern Iowa, is the inaugural Lowe’s Senior CLASS award winner for volleyball. Her performance on the court, in the classroom and in the community has made her a figure of respect in volleyball-crazy Cedar Falls, where the Panthers attract an average of more than 2,000 fans per game.

“Volleyball’s very popular in Iowa. We have so much respect for volleyball… Continue Reading

Collegiate goals accomplished…soccer winners move on to compete in other arenas

by Michael Lewis December 13, 2010 in Men’s Soccer

It should not be surprising that North Carolina midfielder Ali Hawkins and Akron midfielder Anthony Ampaipitakwong earned the women’s and men’s honors for the 2010 Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award.

After all, it has never about them. It has always been about someone or something else.

Their reaction to winning the awards said it all.

“It’s an honor,”  Ampaipitakwong said. “I take it as a team award. My team helped me… Continue Reading

Circle of success helps make Malcolm Delaney a winner

by Ken Davis December 06, 2010 in Men’s Basketball

Talk to Virginia Tech guard Malcolm Delaney for just a few minutes and it becomes obvious he’s not just another tough guy on the basketball court. There’s much more to him than that.

Delaney is all business, without any frills. You might say he conducts his life like a CEO, running a corporation built for success. And even though he often feels overlooked as a player, Delaney has always known what he wants, and how to get there.

Maybe that’s why he has a reputation as the most… Continue Reading

Former soccer winner finds new ways to impact her community after graduation

by Stephanie Lopez Cox November 15, 2010 in Women’s Soccer

The Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award is a portrait of a well-rounded student-athlete, who is not only successful on the field and in the classroom, but demonstrates compassion and service in their community.  After winning this award my senior year at the University of Portland, I realized that the four pillars of the award - Community, Classroom, Character and Competition - were something I should strive to pursue in my professional and personal life.  Though, these areas weren’t so easily… Continue Reading

Lots of smarts and a tough work ethic fuel these successful centers

by Ron Higgins November 08, 2010 in Football

Auburn’s Ryan Pugh and Georgia Tech’s Sean Bedford have never met on a football field, or otherwise, but perhaps they should.

The conversation between the two Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award finalists would start with their love of playing center, the intelligence it takes to recognize defenses and make the blocking calls for the rest of the offensive line.

Pugh, who’s from Hoover, Ala., could tell Bedford, who’s from Gainesville, Fla., that as the son of a 25-year high school… Continue Reading
