Creighton’s Doug McDermott wins 2014 Senior CLASS Award in men’s basketball

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – Three-time All-American Doug McDermott of Creighton has been selected as the 2013-14 Senior CLASS Award® winner in NCAA® Division I men’s basketball.

The award, chosen by a nationwide vote of Division I men’s basketball coaches, national basketball media and fans, is given annually to the most outstanding senior student-athlete in Division I men’s basketball. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – classroom, community, character and competition.

An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.

“I am honored to accept the Senior CLASS Award and wish to thank my family, teammates and coaches who have made it possible,” McDermott said. “I have done my best to set an example for others and am humbled to be in the same company of the past winners of this prestigious award.”

McDermott will graduate in May with a degree in marketing. He has compiled a GPA of 3.00 or better in four of the last six semesters. A team captain as a junior and senior, McDermott completed more than one hundred hours of community service in the Omaha area and was named Creighton’s Male Athlete of the Year.

“While I am thrilled with the success that Doug had on the court, I am equally pleased with the way he has conducted himself as a role model and mentor off the court,” said head coach Greg McDermott. “Doug embodies what the Senior CLASS Award is all about, and we’re proud to call him a Creighton Bluejay.”

McDermott is a three-time, first-team consensus All-American and was the Big East Player of the Year as a senior. He finished his career with 3,150 career points, fifth-most in NCAA history, and 135 games where he scored in double-figures, an NCAA record.  As a Bluejay, he holds the career record for points (3,150), field goals (1,141), three-point percentage (45.8%), and free throws made (594) as well as the single-season record for points (934) and field goals (330).

“Doug completed one of the more memorable four-year runs in NCAA men’s basketball history,” said Erik Miner, executive director for the Senior CLASS Award. “He brought positive attention to the sport by his skills but also by his ability to be a great role model and solid citizen throughout his time at Creighton.”
