Classroom

Goers maintains a cumulative 3.58 grade point average as a business management major at UMass Lowell.  Active outside the classroom, he is a member of the national honor societies Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK) and Beta Gamma Sigma (BGS).  ODK is the National Leadership Society that requires its members to embody five characteristics: exemplary character, responsible leadership and service in campus or community life, superior scholarship, genuine fellowship and consecration to democratic ideals.  BGS is an international business honors society available only to schools accredited by AACSB International.  Goers also took part in the UMass Student Managed Fund competition in 2008-09 analyzing businesses looking for profitable investments using the methods of Warren Buffet and the value investor.  UMass Lowell won the competition, which was open to all UMass campuses.  Goers’ efforts in the classroom have not gone unnoticed.  He was named to the Hockey East All-Academic team in 2006-07 and 2007-08.  Following his summer internship with Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, he ultimately hopes to work in finance, concentrating on sales and trading.

Character

Goers has displayed impeccable character, evident through his assistant captainship with the River Hawks’ hockey team for three consecutive seasons, beginning with his sophomore year.  He has twice been given the UMass Lowell Student-Athlete award and has worked with youth hockey players at the Blaise MacDonald Hockey School for four years.  A long time member of the Boy Scouts of America, Goers received his Eagle Scout award in 2003.

Community

An active member of the community, Goers has read and spoke at several elementary schools in the greater Lowell area, including taking part in Read Around America Day with his teammates.  Some of the causes he has taken part in have been the Saints Medical Center’s fourth annual fall Festival for Life Cancer Walk, the Lowell Canal Cleanup on two occasions and the Lowell Food Drive for the past four years.  In addition, Goers is helping to bring the Cell Phones for Soldiers program to the Tsongas Arena this upcoming season.

Competition

The River Hawks own one of the most stifling defenses in college hockey and Goers has been an intricate piece of that.  Making an immediate impact, he earned Hockey East’s Rookie of the Week during his freshman season and was nominated for the Hobey Baker Award as a sophomore.  Since his freshman campaign, goals allowed per game have dropped from 2.9 to 2.3, opponents’ shooting percentage has fallen from .113 to .084 and opponents’ power play conversion rate has sunk from .222 to a conference best .122. A steady contributor offensively, Goers has scored 37 points (five goals, 32 assists) as a River Hawk.
