Classroom

A senior business major at St. Cloud State, Hanwoski received All-WCHA Academic status in 2011 and 2012.  He also was named as a WCHA Scholar-Athlete award winner in 2012.  At SCSU, Hanowski has received Dean’s List recognition during his college career.

Character

Ben Hanowski has established himself as the Huskies’ team leader on and off the ice during his four year career at SCSU.

A two-time team captain (2011-12 and 2012-13), Hanowski is a vocal team leader in the locker room and is the type of player always ready to volunteer his time and energy in the community and on campus.

In his role as a team captain, Hanowski works closely with the SCSU coaching staff and has played a key role in the team’s success.

A third round draft pick of the Pittsburgh Penguins coming out of high school in 2009, Hanowski has shown his dedication and commitment to St. Cloud State as he enters his fourth season of competition at the college level in 2012-13.

Community

At St. Cloud State, Hanowski has been an active volunteer for many campus and community programs during his college career.

An example of this community involvement in 2012-13 is Hanowski’s ongoing participation with the “Locks of Love” program.  Hanowski has been a leader in getting a group of six SCSU hockey players to grow their hair out for the “Lock of Love” program that provides hair for cancer survivors who need wigs.  The group started growing their hair out at the end of the 2011-12 season and look to continue growing their hair out until it reaches the required length for donation.

In addition, Hanowski has worked with many other causes on campus and in the area.  He has served at SCSU as a Husky Hauler, which is a program that provides assistance on campus move-in day for incoming freshmen moving into the SCSU dorms.

Back home in Little Falls, Minn., Hanowski has volunteered time skating with local youth hockey teams when his schedule allows and he has also worked in St. Cloud for three seasons with the local youth hockey association’s shooting clinic.

Along with his Husky teammates, Hanowski has participated in the annual “Skate With The Huskies,” which is a free open skate community outreach program in St. Cloud.  He has also worked with Salvation Army drives in St. Cloud and last year helped with SCSU’s first-ever Teddy Bear Toss, a Toys for Tots effort during the holiday season.

As a sophomore and junior at SCSU, Hanowski also helped tutor local third and fourth grade students.

Competition

A four-year standout for the Huskies on offense, Hanowski led the Huskies in 2011-12 with 43 points and 23 goals.  He also led the team with 7 power play goals and was third on the team with 20 assists.

Hanowski ranked 13th in Division I in 2011-12 with an average of .59 goals per game and ranked among the nation’s top 30 players with an average of 1.10 points per game in 2011-12.

In the always rugged WCHA, Hanowski ranked fourth (overall games played) with 23 goals and 11th in scoring with 43 points.

In his career at SCSU, Hanowski has 46 goals, 37 assists, 83 points and 17 power play goals in 121 games played.  He currently has played in 71 consecutive games for the Huskies dating back to his sophomore season.

In two games played during the 2012-13 season (thru Oct. 18), Hanowski has already scored one shorthanded goal.
