Classroom

Billins carries a 3.82 GPA entering the 2011-12 school year. In his first three years at Ferris State University, he has made the Dean’s list every semester. Billins was Ferris State’s CCHA Scholar Athlete nominee for 2010. Billins majors in marketing with an emphasis in sports marketing, and he currently holds an internship position within the FSU Athletic Department under Associate Athletic Director, Jon Coles. This internship is providing lessons in learning the real-life facets of marketing while he actively devises a marketing strategy for the Division II women’s varsity volleyball program.

Character

Billins serves as the 2011-12 Ferris State men’s ice hockey team co-captain, which was an honor bestowed to him by the Ferris State coaching staff. He has continuously shown leadership on and off the ice and is a team leader in all off-ice workouts. Through pre-season training Billins served as a “training mentor” for incoming freshmen student-athletes. As a mentor he leads the freshmen in learning how the Bulldog hockey program trains off the ice. The coaches tabbed him in this role to exemplify to the incoming student-athletes what solid work ethic looks like.

Community

Through his career Billins has maintained involvement within the community. Most recently, he led a community hockey outreach day held at Ferris State’s Ewigleben Ice Arena. The program allowed for local youth, who may have never played hockey before, the chance to get on the ice. The youngsters were able to learn the game of hockey through fun on-ice activities with the Ferris State men’s ice hockey team. He has volunteered with the local “Big Event” chapter, which is a large community clean-up event put on annually. He has volunteered as a referee for a local charity hockey game, which raised money for a local hockey player to help pay for his medical bills after being diagnosed with cancer.  Billins also spends time volunteering at the Big Rapids Middle School by assisting with after-school activities including chaperone duties for school dances. Through his internship with the Athletic Department he has worked with local public schools, churches and the Girl Scouts.

Competition

Billins has played in 106 games for the Bulldogs. He has scored four power play goals, one short-handed goal and three game winning goals, all contributing to a total of 10 goals in his career. He has 28 assists in his career thus far for a total of 38 points entering his senior season. In the 2010-11 campaign, Billins was selected twice as CCHA defensemen of the week. In that season’s campaign he registered a team second-most 53 blocked shots. Billins won Ferris State Hockey’s 2011 honor of “King of the Camp”, after completing the annual 2-week competition that determines the team’s best-conditioned student-athlete entering the 2011-12 school year. Continuously, the coaching staff calls upon Billins to perform in overtime shoot-out situations, where he is regarded as a top-performer among the team.
