Chima Nwachukwu has achieved a 4.0 GPA each of his last four semesters and maintains a 3.85 cumulative GPA in political science. For his efforts, Nwachukwu was named a CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American and All-District in 2009. In addition, Nwachukwu made the Pac-10 All-Academic team the last two years, has been a Top 50 Scholar-Athlete and National Society of Collegiate Scholar since 2008 and he has been named to the President’s Honor Roll since 2007.

Character

Currently Nwachukwu serves on the Washington State University Student Conduct Board, he’s the chair of the Cougars Sports Awards and also works as the co-chair of the Pac-10 Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Nwachukwu has also served multiple positions, including president and vice president, on the WSU Student-Athlete Advisory committee, he attended the NCAA National Student-Athlete Development Conference in 2008, volunteered for the Obama Presidential Campaign, worked as an intern in 2009 at ASWSU Student Legal Services and he still works as a Peer Academic Counselor.

Community

Nwachukwu has coordinated several community outreach programs, including the Cougs Helping Haiti Fundraiser, Nike Shoe Drive and Reading Buddies, a program he initiated where athletes volunteer once a week to read to an elementary student one-on-one. In addition, Nwachukwu has volunteered for several programs, including a Girl Scouts blanket drive, VIBES (Visionaries Inspiring Black Empowered Students), National Lentil Festival, MLK National Day of Service, Butch’s Bash and several others that involved either reading or writing to children.

Competition

Nwachukwu started at multiple positions in the Cougars secondary last season. Despite missing three games with an ankle injury, Nwachukwu ranked fourth on the team with 57 tackles and also recorded two fumble recoveries, one forced fumble and an interception. In 2009 Nwachukwu received the WSU Randal D. Simmons Award, which is given annually to a player whose character, commitment and community service stands out amongst his peers.
