Classroom

Belfonte, a finance major, has a 3.72 GPA entering the spring 2010 semester. He is a two-time first-team Academic All Big 12, a Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll member all seven semesters at Nebraska and a 2008 first-team Academic All-District selection.

Character

Belfonte has been considered one of the team leaders for the past three years. He was named the recipient of a UNL Hero Leadership Award winner in 2008 for his athletic and community service achievements. He plans to attend law school following his college career and spent the summer interning at White Goss Bowers March Schulte & Weisenfels Law Firm in Kansas City.

Community

Belfonte is active in community outreach programs, including the Lincoln Paint-a-thon (2006-present) and the Read Aloud Celebrity Reader program (Lincoln LPS - 2007-2010). He is a volunteer at St. Patrick’s Elementary School in Kansas City and has spoken to children at the National American Education Week Speaker (2007),  as well as St. Cloud Elementary School (2007). He is a 2008 UNL Pre-Law Club member and was a guest speaker to kids during the summer he spent in the Northwoods League in 2007.

Competition

Belfonte is a three-year starter in the outfield for Nebraska. He has helped the Huskers to a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances in his career and has started 157 games in his three seasons at NU, hitting .269 with 79 RBIs, 127 runs scored and 33 stolen bases. He is bidding to become the first Husker ever to lead team in stolen bases for three straight years. He ranks second in HBP (42) and topped the team in steals and triples and was fourth in walks and runs scored in 2009.
