Emily Clemens was the Western Illinois Student Athlete of the Year (2017). She is a three-time All-Summit League Academic Honor Roll member, and she was on the Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence (2016-17) and the Summit League All-Academic Team (2-16-17).

Character

Clemens exemplifies the ideal type of student-athlete in Western Illinois program. She’s incredibly competitive on the court but understands the importance of her academics. She’s an intelligent person, which shows on and off the court. Clemens was also invited as an attendee to the NCAA Career in Sports Forum which is held in Indianapolis.

Community

Clemens is involved with Rocky’s Reach, Girl Scouts of Central Illinois, Paint the Paws and Leaves for Loaves. She has also helped out with youth basketball camps in her hometown.

Competition

During the 2016-17 season, Clemens earned her first career Summit League Player of the Year, Summit League Tournament MVP and All-League First Team honors. She was also named The Summit League Female Athlete of the Month for February, as well as being named The Summit League Player of the Week five times during the 2016-17 campaign. Clemens also led the league in points (19.2 ppg), assists (7.3 apg), steals (2.6 spg) and assist/turnover ratio (2.5).

Clemens also set a new program and Summit League record with 234 assists that season, as well as tying a program season record of 623 points. The Muscatine, Iowa, native also set a new program record for a season with 202 made free throws and an 86.3 free throw percentage. The junior guard recorded eight double-doubles, including a triple-double (21 pts., 11 reb., 11 ast.) in the Summit League Tournament semifinals. She also helped the Leathernecks to their first Summit League Tournament title and NCAA Tournament Appearance since 1995, as well as their first regular season crown since 2006. Western Illinois recorded a 26-7 record, its best in program history.
