Emmit Carpenter is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree (2016, 2017) and a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree (2016, 2017). He earned Big Ten Distinguished Scholar honors in 2017 with an overall GPA of 3.611.

Character

Carpenter received the Tony Dungy Character and Community Service Award (great character on and off the field) last season. He is also a nominee for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.

Community

In his limited amount of free time, Carpenter can often be found at the University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital visiting with patients one-on-one. Along with the specialists, he has used his platform with the Gopher Specialists Twitter account to put on the “Can O’Corn Food Drive” and “A Very Specialist Holiday Season.” Through their efforts, they were able to take donations that went toward Thanksgiving meals and buying toys for the Children’s Hospital. Carpenter has formed a special bond with a Children’s Hospital patient named Jace, and often visits with his family whenever they are in the area.

Carpenter goes above and beyond in his service to the community, teammates and the University of the Minnesota as a whole. He is always willing to help and does so with a smile on his face. He helped lead the “Very Specialist Christmas” toy drive last year with the hope that it would create a tradition that will carry on long past his time as a Gopher. There is more Carpenter does than anyone knows, because he never wants the attention to be on himself.

Competition

Carpenter was named the Big Ten’s Bakken-Andersen Kicker of the Year (first Gopher to be honored with this award) and was a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award in 2016. He earned 2016 All-Big Ten First Team honors by the media and 2016 All-Big Ten Second Team honors by Big Ten coaches. In 2017, he was an All-Big Ten Honorable Mention selection.

In 2016, he scored 109 points in a season, which tied Dan Nystrom (109 points in 2000) for most all-time by a Minnesota kicker. His 109 points also is tied for second all-time (with Nystrom) for any Gopher. He ranked fifth in the Big Ten in scoring in 2016. His 81.6 field goal conversion rate ranks first in program history, and his 40 career field goals are tied for fifth in school history with Jim Gallery.

As of nomination time, he has made 26 of 34 field goals at TCF Bank Stadium, 13 of 14 on the road and 1 of 1 in neutral-site games. Carpenter is 34 of 43 on FieldTurf and is a perfect 6 of 6 on natural grass. In addition, he has made 81 of 82 career point after attempts. Through two games, Carpenter had made 4 of 5 field goals and all nine point-after attempts in 2018. He now has 201 career points as he has made 81 PATs and 40 field goals. He is the sixth kicker and 11th player overall to reach 200 career points for the Gophers. He has twice drilled two 50-plus field goals in a game and is a three-time B1G Special Teams Player of the Week honoree.
