Classroom
Howerton earned his bachelor’s degree from SMU, majoring in applied physiology and sport management.
He is a three-time member of the American Athletic Conference All-Academic Team and a recipient of the SMU Sport Performance Leadership Departmental Distinction Award.
Howerton is currently working on a master’s in management.
Character
Howerton is entering his second season as a team captain for the Mustangs.
He was also selected to SMU’s Leadership Council and is the team’s nominee for the William V. Campbell Trophy.
Community
While at SMU, Howerton has volunteered in multiple community initiatives.
He has volunteered with youth clinics, hospitals, homeless shelters, and read at local elementary schools. Howerton also assisted in turning over cots and passing out blankets during the winter.
Competition
Howerton, an All-Conference selection in 2020, has been a consistent presence for the Mustangs throughout his career. He is the active leader in games played with 49.
Last season, Howerton helped the Mustangs to national rankings of eight in red zone (.920), 13th in passing (318.0), and 15th in scoring offense (38.6).
He has also led SMU to three bowl appearances and a national ranking as high as No.15/14 in 2019.
