Character
Evans joined the Irish as a freshman in 2014-15 as one of the youngest players on the team and has steadily become one of the team’s leaders. Following his sophomore season, he was voted as the team’s most improved player. Evans served as an alternate captain as a junior and helped to lead the Irish to the 2017 Frozen Four. He is the team’s captain for his senior season.
Community
Beginning in his junior season with teammate Anders Bjork, Evans has visited the Perley Fine Arts Academy in South Bend to spend time in local third-grade classrooms. He also has taken part in Habitat for Humanity builds, the Fighting Irish Fight For Life program and Real Services (helping elderly community members with various projects such as yard work).
Competition
Evans has developed into one of the nation’s best two-way centers who plays in all game situations. A 2014 seventh round (207th overall) Montreal Canadiens draft selection, Evans has now skated in 122 of a possible 123 career games (as of Oct. 18, 2017). With a two assist game against Denver (Oct. 14, 2017), he pushed his career points total to 100 (31-69-100) to become the 52nd player in program history with at least 100 career points. In four games as a senior, Evans ranks second nationally with eight points (as of Oct. 18, 2017).
Last season as a junior, Evans had a pair of assists, including on the game-winner in Notre Dame’s 3-2 comeback win over Minnesota in round one of the NCAA Championship (March 25, 2017). He also had an assist on Cam Morrison’s game-tying goal against UMass Lowell in the 3-2 overtime win to help send the Irish to the Frozen Four (March 26, 2017). Evans finished his junior season as the team’s second leading scorer with 42 points on 13 goals and 29 assists.
