Jakaitis is a two-time Central Collegiate Hockey Association Scholar-Athlete with a 3.35 grade point average. He was named the Soo BlueLiners Scholar-Athlete of the Year as a sophomore and is expected to earn a business degree this spring.
Character
LSSU coach Jim Roque said after Jakaitis was named CCHA/RBC Player of the Month for December 2006…“He’s even a better person than he is a goalie.” Jakaitis was given an honor rarely afforded to goaltenders – he was named the Lakers’ assistant captain in 2006-07 due to his character and leadership abilities.
Community
Jakaitis has been involved in a number of community projects, the most-notable being the Relay for Life (he ran on the track dressed up as Britney Spears last summer) and he is a volunteer at the Boys and Girls Club of Chippewa County. He has done PSAs for www.volunteer.org. He has also been active in a variety of team community service projects, including a spaghetti supper for the United Way and bell ringing for the Salvation Army.
Competition
The national leader in save percentage at .938 and ranked among the top five nationally in goals-against average at 1.99. LSSU’s three-time most-valuable player was a finalist for CCHA Player of the Year in 2005-06. As a junior, he was also named to the All-CCHA First Team and CCHA Perani Cup Points Champion. He broke LSSU’s career shutout record this season and is expected to become the Lakers’ leader in career save percentage. He won the fan voting in phase I of voting for the Hobey Baker Award. Jakaitis is a finalist for the Pontiac NCAA Skills Challenge, which will also be determined by fan voting.
