In 2016 Jessica January was named the I-AAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year and also earned third-team CoSIDA Academic All-America honors. She is a three-time member of the BIG EAST All-Academic Team and has been named to DePaul’s Dean’s List and Athletic Director’s Academic Honor Roll in every quarter she’s been enrolled. January has earned DePaul’s Shirley Becker Academic Award three times and boasts the team’s top GPA while pursuing a double major in public relations/advertising and communications/media with a minor in mathematics.

Character

Last season, January became the first junior to be named a team captain since the 2003-04 season, and she continued that role as a senior. She was chosen to attended the BIG EAST Conference Transitions Game Program in NYC this season and is a member of DePaul’s Captains’ Council.

Community

January has participated in a variety of community and outreach projects, including the following: Misericordia volunteer (2013-present), St. Vincent DePaul Center Christmas Gift Drive (2013-present), St. Vincent DePaul Student Service Days (2013-present), DePaul University Women’s Basketball Feed the Homeless volunteer, DePaul University Athletics Blanket Drive volunteer (2013-2016), Girls in the Game volunteer, Sheffield Garden Walk volunteer, Erie Neighborhood House volunteer, and after-school activity volunteer at St. Vincent DePaul Center.

Competition

The 2016-17 BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year, January was named to the 2016 NCAA Dallas All-Regional Team and earned BIG EAST All-Conference Second Team honors as a junior. Last season, she led the Blue Demons and the BIG EAST with 211 assists, and her 2.64 assist-to-turnover ratio ranked eighth in Division I. During DePaul’s run to the Sweet 16, January averaged 21.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.7 assists per game, and she entered her senior season with 1,230 career points which ranked 22nd all-time at DePaul. At the start of the season, her 425 career assists also ranked seventh while her 199 steals was 13th in DePaul’s record book. She entered her senior season as the BIG EAST’s active career leader in assists (425) and steals (199), while listing second in points (1,230) and rebounds (457).
