Character

Sclafani has certainly been a leader during his career, being named captain twice. While he leads by example, holding himself to a high standard that others strive to emulate, he can also be vocal in helping others through slumps, errors and/or difficult situations on the field and off. Charismatic in a subdued manner, Sclafani is a natural leader that will afford him success either in his baseball career after graduating or in his professional career of choosing. Yet his most valued goals come in the form of success for the team/organization rather than his own personal achievements.

Community

Sclafani has participated in the Big Green Readers program and the Special Olympics in each of his four years. In addition, he has assisted at a foster home with the entire team during his sophomore year.

Competition

Sclafani was a first-team All-Ivy selection as a junior and freshman, and a second-team pick as a sophomore. On top of being on the All-Ivy First Team as a junior, he was also a second-team All-New England selection. A career .338 hitter, Sclafani has hit at least .325 and posted an on-base percentage of at least .414 in each of his three seasons. Last year he ranked third in the nation in triples per game, and his 16 career triples are tied for the most ever at Dartmouth. He is on pace to break the school career records for hits, triples, games played, at-bats and walks. He is also the premier defensive shortstop in the Ivy League with a career .943 fielding percentage. A two-time captain, Sclafani has helped Dartmouth win the Red Rolfe Division in the Ivy League each of the last three years while winning the conference crown in 2009 and 2010. Collegiate Baseball chose him as one of their Freshman All-Americans after the 2009 season, and the Ivy League coaches pegged him as the conference Rookie of the Year. In his sophomore campaign, he homered twice in an NCAA Regional game versus Miami, capping a season in which he hit .325 while ranking second in the league in walks (33) and assists (119).

Sclafani was named the Ivy League Player of the Week for the third time in his career on April 10 after hitting .476 for the week, tying the conference record for career triples (18) and becoming the fifth Big Green player to amass 200 hits in a career
