Mickelsen is pursuing a degree in Criminology major with an emphasis in Law Enforcement. He currently sports a 2.93 cumulative GPA over his first three years at Fresno State.
Character
Mickelsen never complains, whether it be early mornings or late nights, he’s a leader on the field and off of it, being an example for newcomers from his positive attitude every day. Mickelsen always has a smile on his face, brings energy to the field and never turns down an opportunity to help someone else.
Community
Karl is heavily involved in giving back to the community. He often frequents local schools to talk to children on the importance of education, hard work and exercise. He also participates in Fresno State’s Big Heroes, Little Heroes program with Childrens Hospital Central California and is a member of Fresno State’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). In each of the past two years, Fresno State has won the Mountain West SAAC Community Service Award for the most community service hours served by a school in the conference. As a committee member, Mickelsen is responsible for helping coordinate community service efforts with Fresno State student-athletes. While being responsible for community service efforts, he helped organized events such as a blood drive and a clothing drive on campus.
Competition
Mickelsen was named an Honorable Mention All-Mountain West performer in 2013 after recording a team-high 97 tackles. His total was the highest by a Bulldog defender in five seasons. His best game came in perhaps the biggest win of the season when Fresno State ended a seven-game losing streak to Boise State with a 41-40 win at Bulldog Stadium when Karl recorded a game-high 16 tackles. He recorded a season-high 1.5 tackles for loss in the Las Vegas Bowl against USC. Mickelsen has played in all 39 games since he arrived on campus three years ago.
