Competition
Mississippi State forward LaToya Thomas came to the university and was immediately successful. She averaged 21 points a game during her freshman season and won many Freshman and Newcomer of the Year awards. She continued her dominant play through her sophomore and junior seasons and finished 5th and 2nd respectively in scoring in the NCAA national rankings while breaking the season scoring record at Mississippi State both years.
LaToya entered her senior season as a three time Kodak All-American and went on to win it as well as many other awards including the AP All-American First Team, 2003 Naismith Player of the Year, Wade Trophy finalist and SEC player of the year. She averaged 25.6 points per game and 9 rebounds and became Mississippi State’s all-time leading scorer with a total of 2,981 points, led the SEC in scoring for the fourth straight year and moved up to second on the all-time SEC career scoring list and seventh in NCAA history.
