Character
Laurie Wagner is a very thoughtful human being who has never let herself down. Even after the death of her mother the fall before Wagner’s freshman season, Wagner never let herself quit. She is determined, which shows in her character and her game, especially after last season. Wagner and her sister, Leah donated majority of the funds for the scoreboard at Cougar Softball Stadium in memory of her mother Alicia Wagner.
Community
The Cougar softball team does many charitable events including their annual Striking Out Breast Cancer game, in which the team has raised $18,000 in two years for the Susan G. Komen Houston Affiliate. This season, Houston will play Texas A&M at 7 p.m. at Cougar Softball Stadium. The day will include a silent auction, which includes the player’s jerseys and helmets worn during the game and other items. The Cougars also adopted Shelby Taylor, a four-year brain cancer survivor from MD Anderson Hospital. Shelby has tallied seven surgeries in the past four years, including many therapy sessions. The team sends Shelby packages, including a scrapbook and candy, which was sent on Nov. 5, 2008. Each player created a page with photos and their favorite things, and with these pages, Shelby was able to visualize the team she would meet a week later.
Competition
Last season, Laurie Wagner broke both the single-season and conference record in home runs with 19. She also topped the program’s single-season record in runs batted in with 57 last season. For her performance on the field, she was named to the 2008 NFCA All-American Third Team, Conference USA All-Tournament Team and All-Conference USA First Team
