Lizzy Wendell owns a 3.05 grade-point average in elementary education. She plans to be a teacher in either kindergarten, first, second or third grade. She holds endorsements in Reading, Coaching, Mathematics and English Language Learner.

Character

As a student-athlete, Wendell has been committed to her goals on the court, in the classroom and in her civic responsibilities. Community

Wendell has been a part of 3,000 community service hours with the Drake women’s basketball program. She has volunteered with many different Drake and Des Moines organizations including the Boys and Girls Club, Girls Scouts of America, Habitat for Humanity, Courage League Sports, Youth Emergency Services, Shelter of Iowa and Meals for the Heartland. By the time she graduates will have been part of 4,000 community service hours. Wendell embodies the true spirit of teamwork and giving back through all of her admirable acts of kindness.

Competition

This season, Wendell has a a chance to join an impressive group of former Drake and Missouri Valley Conference greats. Wendell, who led the league in scoring in each of the previous two seasons, is a three-time All-MVC First Team selection and was named the MVC Freshman of the Year in 2014. She has scored 1,859 career points to rank fifth among active NCAA players, seventh all-time at Drake and 13th all-time in the MVC. The Blue Springs, Mo., native has an opportunity to move to No. 2 all-time in career points at Drake and in the MVC with former Drake legend Wanda Ford (1982-86) currently second all-time in school and MVC history with 2,636 points. Wendell’s 19.4 points per game career scoring average currently ranks fourth and seventh all-time in Drake and MVC history, respectively. She has scored 10 or more points in 78 straight games, a streak that goes all the way back to her freshman season. She is a two-time MVC preseason Player of the Year selection and a three-time All-MVC Preseason First Team selection. As a junior she was selected as the Drake University Howlett Female Athlete of the Year. She is a nine-time MVC Player of the Week and eight-time MVC Newcomer of the Week selection, and, as of nomination time, had started 94-straight games.
