Malcolm Moreno is a double major in finance and international studies. He was named to the dean’s list last semester, achieving a 3.5 GPA. Moreno has held two internships at nonprofit organizations. One of them worked with refugees in Europe by helping them assimilate to their new environment away from home. The other was an educational nonprofit called SCIP, which provides students from diverse backgrounds with the tools to navigate “Corporate America” through guidance and mentorship. So far in his career, Moreno is a two-time member of the MAAC All-Academic Team and MAAC Academic Honor Roll.

Character

Moreno is an avid supporter of his fellow Gaels and can be seen leading cheers at various different venues on campus. Most notably, Moreno leads a cheering section at women’s soccer behind the Iona College Pep Band’s bass drum. He also represents his team as Iona men’s soccer’s SAAC representative.

Community

Moreno and his team have helped out both inside and outside the Iona community. Moreno has participated in on-campus events such as Relay for Life, raising money and awareness for those who suffer from cancer; Ionathon, raising money and awareness for those affected by childhood cancer; and Lift-O-Ween, raising money for New Rochelle families who are burdened during the Christmas holiday.

Competition

Moreno is a four-year starter on Iona’s backline. As a freshman, he started the final 11 games of the season on defense and was a part of two shutouts. He then started in all 13 of his appearances in his sophomore season, registering a game-winning goal in an overtime victory over Marist. He also assisted on the game-winning OT goal in Iona’s win over Quinnipiac. Moreno started all 16 of his appearances last season, helping Iona to the conference tournament. The Gaels hosted their first-ever postseason game that season. Moreno set career bests in assists and shots on goal, and at the season’s end, he was honored as a member of the All-MAAC Second Team.
