Classroom

Mike Johnson is a double major in sociology and computer applications at Notre Dame.  He enters his senior year with a 3.59 grade-point average.  As a junior, he was Notre Dame’s recipient of the CCHA’s scholar-athlete award and a finalist for the league’s scholar-athlete of the year.  At Notre Dame, he received the Notre Dame Club of St. Joseph Valley’s Rockne Scholar-Athlete Award.

Character

Mike Johnson is one of four seniors on the 2012-13 Notre Dame hockey team and serves on the team’s seven-man leadership group.  He is in his second year serving as a member of Notre Dame’s Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and is a three-year member of Notre Dame’s Rosenthal Leadership Academy.  He is one of the most respected players on the Irish roster not only among his peers but also, by the coaching staff and administrators.

Community

Mike Johnson will oversee the Notre Dame hockey team’s community service efforts this season.  He is in his second season as one of the hockey team’s liaisons to Notre Dame’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).  He has been active in the team’s community service efforts throughout his Notre Dame career.  As for community service activities this season, Mike has participated in the Irish Experience Camp during the summer and early fall.  The camp works with disadvantaged kids, teaching them to set goals and how to work towards them.  As a junior, he was a member of Life Work’s Dream Teams that visited area schools, serving as mentors to elementary school children.  Throughout his career at Notre Dame, Mike has been active in the Irish Youth Hockey League (IYHL), working with local youth hockey groups, teaching and helping grow the game in the local area. He has participated in team activities like the Junior Diabetes Walk, the Buddy Walk for kids with Downs Syndrome and has participated in Habitat for Humanity.

Competition

Mike Johnson is a three-time monogram winner for the Irish and is in his four season between the pipes at Notre Dame. This season, he has made three starts and is 2-1-0 with a 2.76 goals-against average and a .904 save percentage in helping Notre Dame to a 15-9-0 overall record as of January 25.  All three of his games have come in the CCHA where the team is tiedf or first place with an 11-5-0 mark.  During his career, he is 41-34-12 with a 2.64 goals-against average and a .901 save percentage with two shutouts.

As a junior in 2011-12, he was 9-10-3 overall with a 2.69 goals-against average and a .883 save percentage. In 2010-11, as a sophomore, he led the Irish to the to the Frozen Four while being named to the NCAA Northeast Region all-tournament team and was the tournament¹s most valuable player in wins over Merrimack and New Hampshire. He was 20-13-4 that year with a 2.62 goals-against average and a .901 save percentage with two shutouts. He is just one of six Notre Dame goaltenders to win 20 games in a season and one of eight with 40 or more wins.  As a freshman he was selected to the CCHA all-rookie team and was Notre Dame¹s rookie of the year.  He is fourth all-time in goals-against average (2.64), is fifth in save percentage (.901), sixth in winning percentage (.536), tied for seventh in wins (41) and is tied for seventh in games played/started (94/85).
