Classroom

Cantwell maintains a 3.16 GPA in Health Sciences. He hopes to play professional baseball, but after that he wants to become a physical therapist. Cantwell has successfully completed many of the pre-requisite admissions courses for graduate study in physical therapy and has challenged himself in the classroom during his tenure at Stony Brook. He was drafted after his junior season but decided to return to Stony Brook to earn his degree because he values his education. Cantwell has been named to the Dean’s List on multiple occasions, as well as being named to the America East Conference Honor Roll.

Character

It is easy to see the ease with which Cantwell leads his baseball team, but his leadership affects many more students than his teammates. Each year, Stony Brook Athletics Director Jim Fiore chooses to honor one male and one female rising senior, and Cantwell was honored with this award last spring. The Athletic Director’s Award is given to two Stony Brook student-athletes who best embody the core values of the Stony Brook University athletics department and will serve as a leader to all Stony Brook student-athletes. Cantwell’s exemplary character translates to the classroom, as well, and can be verified by any of his instructor’s on campus.

Community

Cantwell has been a member of the Stony Brook SAAC since his freshman year on campus. The SAAC is committed to giving back to the Stony Brook community and Cantwell plays a large part in the organization and leadership that this committee has in various events hosted each year. Specifically, he works with the SAAC to organize the Halloween FunFest, allowing kids in the Stony Brook community a safe and fun atmosphere to trick-or-treat with Stony Brook student-athletes. As a leader on the baseball team, Cantwell has helped to organize a bone marrow drive for a local teen and a blood drive that his entire team has participated in. He combines his role as a student-athlete and his aspirations in the health field to have an impact in the Stony Brook community.

Competition

Cantwell started 52 of the Seawolves 54 games at catcher last season, earning All-America East first-team honors and leading the Seawolves to a school record 42 victories. He hit .308 with 14 doubles and 46 runs scored and led the America East by throwing out 16 of 26 would-be base stealers. The prior season he played 51 games, including 37 in the outfield, and was a second-team all-conference selection as an outfielder in addition to being named the Most Outstanding Player of the America East tournament as he led the Seawolves to the NCAA tournament. He was sixth in the America East with a .361 batting average and 15 doubles.
