Classroom

Holding a 3.38 cumulative GPA as an english and psychology double major, McAvoy is currently completing an honors thesis in psychology and is planning on pursuing an additional honors thesis in creating writing. McAvoy’s commitment to the classroom has earned him a spot on the ECAC Hockey All-Academic Team on three occasions, as well as a trio of Raider Academic Honor Roll recognitions.

Character

For his leadership, McAvoy was voted to serve as team captain for the 2020-21 campaign. McAvoy is described by the coaching staff as full of character, focused, and committed to his teammates, and the broader Colgate and Hamilton communities.

In his time at Colgate, McAvoy has served as a quiet leader who does things the right way on and off the ice, and works to make things better for those around him on a daily basis.

Community

McAvoy serves as the men’s hockey representative on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and is active in the group’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives and voter education efforts.

McAvoy is also a member of the Wellness Advocates, a group dedicated to promoting the conversation surrounding mental health in athletics, and has led the team’s relationship with the Headway Foundation for three years, an organization promoting concussion awareness.

McAvoy also previously coordinated visits with Team Impact individuals, to Sherburne Elementary where the team volunteers, and ran a hockey camp hosted for inner-city kids from Philadelphia.

Competition

In what was a breakout 2019-20 season where the forward appeared in 35 of 36 games for the Raiders prior to the cancellation of the ECAC Tournament, McAvoy was named ECAC Hockey Player of the Week on Jan. 27, 2020 after a four-point weekend with two goals and two assists against then-No. 16 Harvard and then-No. 20 Dartmouth.

McAvoy marked the second-most goals on the team (9), paired with eight assists for 17 points on the year. In his efforts, McAvoy recorded two game-winning goals and two power play goals, posted four multi-point performances, tallied 43 shots on goal, and finished with a plus-3 rating on the ice.

McAvoy marked multi-goal games on two occasions in 2019-20, in the 3-3 overtime tie against Miami (OH) and again in the 3-3 overtime tie against then-No. 20 Dartmouth and tallied a season-high of four shots on goal on three occasions.
