Classroom

O’Brien studies Economics and spends countless hours with tutors to make sure he understands the difficult calculus-based material. He makes a point to establish a strong relationship with his professors and advisors since his schedule as a student-athlete is very demanding. As a transfer student, he entered the University of Miami in good academic standing and continued to do so during his first semester. Even though he has been a Cane for such a short period of time, he is truly an ambassador for the University.

Character

O’Brien made an immediate impact among the entire University of Miami Athletic Department and the campus. He sets the bar among his peers as his motivation and drive permeates amongst those that he interacts with. Coach Jim Morris knew that he would be the team’s captain after Peter’s very first team practice. His teammates look to him for advice, encouragement and camaraderie and would consider themselves as one family unit.

Community

During his time at MIami, O’Brien visited a local elementary school with some of his teammates to spread the positive message of college athletics and the importance of a strong education. He has been a part of the “MBA” Melendez Baseball Academy for years, where he works with 4-16 year-old students on baseball fundamentals and speak to the youth about smart decision-making and choosing role models. Aside from these activities O’Brien has been involved with all of the baseball clinics held at Bethune Cookman and the University of Miami.

Competition

O’Brien enters his senior season on five preseason All-America teams: Louisville Slugger, ESPN, National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA), Collegiate Baseball Lineup and Perfect Game USA. He was a 2011 MLB Draft third-round selection and was on the 2011 Golden Spikes Award and Johnny Bench Award watch lists. He was named the 2010 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Year, a 2010 Louisville Slugger third-team All-American and was picked for the 2010 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team.
