Brockel earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting in just three and one-half years (August of 2008).  He graduated among the top 10 percent of his class and cum laude from the College of Business.  His GPA was 3.70.  He will earn his master’s degree in accounting in December of 2009 in just four and one-half years.  His current GPA is also 3.70.  He has been a member of the Dean’s List with Honors five different times, and a member of the Dean’s List with Highest Honors one term.  He is a three-time member of the Western Athletic Conference All-Academic Football Team, and received first-team ESPN the Magazine District 8 All-Academic honors in 2008.

Character

Brockel is an outstanding individual and leader. He is a very driven person who is always looking for a challenge in life, and on the playing field. He is a very well spoken individual and an excellent role model for the younger members of our team, and for the youth in Boise. This past July Richie was selected as a nominee for the 2009 Allstate / American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Good Work Team.

Community

Brockel regularly participates in the St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center Bronco Bunch community service project where he visits the medical center to read and visit with youth who are in the hospital.  He volunteers his time with the local Make-A-Wish program.  He also attended and visited with kids and their parents during an event at the 2008 Poinsettia Bowl in San Diego. He regularly goes to elementary schools in the community and reads to kids. Brockel has worked with the local little league baseball program, including throwing out the first pitch of the season. He worked on a local home for the “Extreme Makeover” television show. He organized a charity softball event this past summer with the First Tee of Idaho program and the Boise State football team. While visiting family in New Jersey, he spoke to six different elementary classes regarding nutrition and the importance of how a healthy body can have an effect on your academics. Brockel was also a keynote speaker at a local middle school’s graduation ceremony.

Competition

Brockel is a three-year letterman for the Boise State football team.  He is a two-year starter at fullback and scored two touchdowns last year.  He has helped Boise State to the 2006 and 2008 WAC championships, and the 2007 Fiesta Bowl championship.  He is a team captain of the 2009 Boise State football team.
