Character

Johnson is seen as a silent leader on the team, but when she does speak, everyone listens. She is one of the hardest workers on the team, and it shows through her talent on the court. She quickly earned the respect of her teammates, becoming a leader on the court as a freshman starter. As of nomination time, she had started 90 straight games in her career, and that can be attributed to her strong work ethic and being a positive role model to the team. Johnson is a team player and always looks at situations through the lens of what’s best for the team.

“Seanna Johnson is someone who is respected by everyone she encounters because of the character she shows in all areas of her life. Her impact has been dramatic both on and off the court, and that is what special student-athletes can accomplish during their time on campus. She will go down as one of the best people to ever wear an Iowa State uniform.” - Head Coach Bill Fennelly

Community

Throughout her time at Iowa State, Seanna Johnson has participated in numerous community service events, including attending Miracle League, St. Jude’s Give A Thanks Walk, Friends of Jaclyn Foundation, Ames Farmers Market, Christmas shopping for families in need and CyCans on a regular basis. Johnson is especially committed to promoting living a healthy lifestyle as she volunteers at Healthy Streets Ames, which helps promote living an active and healthy lifestyle. She also went to Gilbert Elementary to speak to students about health and fitness. Johnson also visited Ronald McDonald House with her teammates while on a road trip and volunteered at the United Community Schools summer program for two summers. Johnson is easily recognizable in the community and is a fan favorite. After every game, her autograph line is the longest as she continues to be a positive role model for young girls in the Ames community.

Competition

Seanna Johnson has had one of the most remarkable careers of any women’s basketball player at Iowa State. She was recently named to the preseason All-Big 12 Team and was on the All-Big 12 First Team in 2015-16. Johnson is the top returning scorer (17.0) and rebounder (9.4) in the Big 12, and she also led the Big 12 in rebounding in 2014-15 with 9.2 per game. She ranked second in the Big 12 in her junior campaign with an improved 9.4 boards per game.

Last season, Johnson was the only player in the country to average 17.0 points, 9.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists. As of nomination time, she ranked 22nd in school history in points (1,156), eighth in rebounds (797) and fourth with 27 double-doubles. She reached 500, 600 and 700 career rebounds faster than any player in Iowa State history, despite standing at just 5’ 10”. Johnson is also one of just four Cyclones to reach 1,000 points, 700 rebounds and 200 assists in her career. Her outstanding play earned her a spot in the starting lineup of every game she has appeared, giving her 90-straight starts. She has also scored in double figures in 63 career games and rebounded in double-figures in 39 career games.
