Classroom

Three-year member of the Minnesota Maroon Honor Roll.  He represented Minnesota on the All-WCHA Academic Team as a junior in 2011-12.

Character

Currently serving as an alternate captain for the Golden Gopher hockey team and Minnesota’s most veteran player, he has played in 85-consecutive games for Minnesota (active streak).  Helgeson is not afraid to defend his teammates during game action and has recorded 164 career penalty minutes.

Community

Given annually to the Gopher who is most active in the community, Helgeson is a three-time recipient of Minnesota’s Donald M. Clark Community Service Award.  He is a four-year volunteer at Minnesota’s HopeDay Festival, which partners Gopher student-athletes with children suffering from cancer and other life-threatening illnesses and their families to show that hope is a powerful medicine.  He frequently volunteers with local and regional youth hockey groups and also participates in Minnesota’s Maroon and Gold Impacting the Community (M.A.G.I.C) program, visiting local schools and teaching the importance of education as a student-athlete.

Competition

Minnesota’s most experienced player with 114 career appearances, he has recorded 22 career points (seven goals, 15 assists) with the Gophers and a plus-26 for his career with 87 career blocks.  He as improved his contributions to the team in each of his three seasons including career-highs in goals (5), assists (9), points (14), plus/minus (plus+12) and blocks (43) as a junior in 2011-12 and was instrumental on the blue line for Minnesota’s return to the Frozen Four last season and the team’s MacNaughton Cup championship.
