Classroom

Werts has graduated with a degree in sport management. In 2019-20, he earned Sun Belt Conference Commissioner’s List honors. He is also a three-time Sun Belt Conference Academic Honor Roll member, from 2016-18.

Character

Werts was falsely charged and arrested for having a substance on his career while arriving to campus last year. During this situation, he kept his composure and dealt with the media admirably. Werts now uses his platform to raise awareness against false imprisonment, something he would like to concentrate on when he graduates college.

He has also been an advocate for social justice this preseason, using his position to try and do good in the community. This season, Werts is a nominee for the Wuerffel Trophy and AFCA Good Works Team.

Community

Georgia Southern led all FBS teams in 2018-19 in community service hours logged and was second in 2019-20 before the pandemic. Werts was a large part of that community service initiative. In previous offseasons, Werts has led his off-season competition team to over 515 hours of community service.

During his career, Werts has individually composed over 100 hours of community service. He has volunteered with Athletes in Action, Boys and Girls Club, Fight Against Childhood Obesity, Bulloch County Back to School Drive, Relay for Life, and community food banks through churches. Werts also helped build houses for the less fortunate with Habitat for Humanity and raised awareness of sexual violence against women with Walk a Mile in Her Shoes.

Werts is also a member of the Georgia Southern SAAC.

Competition

Werts is a two-time All-Conference selectio who has started over 40 games. He is approaching both the Sun Belt Conference career rushing record by a QB, as well as the school record for career touchdown passes. Werts will soon reach 3,000 rushing and passing yards for his career, and is the NCAA FBS active leader in career rushing yards by a QB.

Werts is a two-time team captain, as voted on by his teammates.
