Sophie Brunner has established herself as a high achiever in the classroom. As of the start of the Fall 2016 semester, she had a 3.66 GPA. Her high GPA helped the Sun Devil women’s basketball team to a No. 7 ranking in the WBCA’s Academic Top 25 in 2015. She was named Pac-12 Academic Honorable Mention in both 2015 and 2016, has earned Dean’s List honors four times and has earned distinction as a Sun Devil Scholar-Athlete all six semesters of her academic career. Brunner is also a past member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

Character

Sophie Brunner is one in a million. She is intelligent, genuinely giving, hard-working, compassionate and a servant-leader. After only one season, she won the program’s coveted “Coaches Award.” Brunner exemplifies what and who the Senior CLASS Award wants to recognize. She is a selfless student-athlete who can consistently perform at the highest level across every platform, in the community, in the classroom and on the court.

Community

Brunner has an incredible sense of duty to give back to the community. Her selfless and giving attitude have been on display since her freshman year when she enthusiastically volunteered to be a frequent participant in the Character Code program. Since that time Brunner has led assemblies in more than 30 schools across the Valley where she encourages youth to practice good character at home, at school and with friends.

In 2014 Brunner joined a group of Sun Devil student-athletes who traveled with Arizona State University American Indian students to Hopi and Navajo lands as part of the ASU Tribal Nations Tour. She joined her peers in the endeavor to interact with tribal members, encourage higher education and wellness, and work on community service projects.

Brunner’s community service efforts have also included being a leader in the Interact Program, where she performed service projects for the underserved, made holiday baskets and kits for Haiti and organized food drives. She also took part in the Cause Program, a faith-based group that provided resources for Pro Life and was involved in DAWG, a drug and alcohol awareness group promoting sobriety and mentoring her peers.

In 2015 Brunner was a nominee for the Allstate WBCA and NABC Good Works Teams®, a prestigious community service award that recognizes a distinguished group of student-athletes who have demonstrated a commitment to enriching the lives of others and contributing to the greater good in their communities.

Competition

Sophie Brunner has had a major role in helping the Sun Devil women’s team return to being among the nation’s elite programs. Since her freshman season in 2013-14, Brunner has helped lead the Sun Devils to a 78-23 record, three NCAA Tournament appearances (including a Sweet 16 appearance in 2015), a Pac-12 regular season co-championship in 2016 and a No. 2 seed in the 2016 NCAA Tournament, the highest seed in program history. A starter in 84 of 95 career games, in 2016 Brunner earned honorable mention recognition on the 2016 WBCA NCAA Division I Coaches’ All-America Team, the first Sun Devil to earn All-America notice since Briann January in 2009. She returned this season as ASU’s active leader in points (957), rebounds (678, third on ASU’s all-time list), assists (126) and steals (138). Brunner also is second on ASU’s all-time list for most rebounds (56) in the NCAA Tournament. She has earned All-Pac-12 and Pac-12 Defensive Honorable Mention recognition each of the last two seasons and also earned Pac-12 All-Freshman honorable mention recognition in 2014.
